Love in the Jazz Age: Z: The Beginning of Everything
Their love story and life together was the personification of the Roaring '20s. The Fitzgeralds were the celebrity couple of their time, and Amazon's new Z: The Beginning of Everything focuses on the arguably more compelling of the two - Zelda. The 10-episode series is inspired by Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler. Christina Ricci (The Addams Family, The Lizzie Borden Chronicles) plays Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, the brilliant and beautiful Southern Belle who becomes a legendary flapper and wife of author F. Scott Fitzgerald (David Hoflin). It begins with their fateful meeting in Montgomery, Ala., and moves through their love affair, marriage and Fitzgerald's literary success, played out in the salons and speakeasies of Montgomery and New York City. Ricci plays an exquisite Zelda, full of fire, stubbornness and resilience. Determined to make her own identity separate from her famous husband, she was a woman ahead of her time . The first season focuses on young love, dreams of fame and (literally) intoxicating days during the height of Prohibition. Midnight Friday, Amazon.
Another Studio Ghibli treasure: Ronja
Fans of Tales from Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill will definitely want to add the new anime series Ronja, the Robber's Daughter to their watchlist. Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary leader of Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli, retired from making films a few years ago but his son Goro Miyazaki helms Ronja, the Robber's Daughter. Based on children's book Ronia, the Robber's Daughter by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, the series follows the only child of a bandit chief who grows up in a clan of thieves and eventually plucks up the courage to explore the surrounding forest by herself. Out there, Ronja meets a boy her age who turns out to be the son of a rival clan chief, and so begins a journey of friendship and struggles over family loyalties. The voice cast includes Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) as the narrator and Teresa Gallagher as Ronja. Midnight Friday, Amazon.
Cerebral upgrade: iBOY
Though crowned with a goofy title, Netflix's new original movie iBOY is surprisingly dark. The story follows an average teenager (Bill Milner, X-Men: First Class) after a violent attack leaves shards of his cellphone imbedded in his brain. He wakes up from a coma with smartphone-type abilities, like being able to interact with texts and funny cat videos. Instead of losing his mind or becoming a tool for the NSA, he uses his newfound powers to become a sort of vigilante to seek revenge on the gang who also attacked his best friend (Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams). 3 a.m. Friday, Netflix.
End of the Golden Age of Piracy: Black Sails
The fourth and final season of Starz's high seas adventure drama begins Sunday. Black Sails, produced by Jonathan Steinberg and Michael Bay, is a preview to the events of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Its past three seasons have focused on hunting for treasure and fighting other pirates for said treasure. Real-life pirates Anne Bonny, Jack Rackham and Blackbeard have all been portrayed in the series. The final season sees war return to 18th century Nassau with the pirates and the British fighting for control of the islands. 9 p.m., Jan. 29, Starz
