What to watch this weekend: 'Sharknado 5,' 'Comrade Detective'
Spoof: Comrade Detective
If you're looking for something absurd, yet weirdly brilliant, give Comrade Detective a watch. Amazon's newest comedy, from Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (I KNOW), is made to feel like a real 1980s Romanian cop show that was created by the government in the midst of Cold War hysteria. Real Romanian actors perform in the series, but are hilariously overdubbed by familiar American voices. It feels silly and outdated, yet the Communist propaganda parody is full of Marx references and witty nationalist gibes. Tatum and Gordon-Levitt voice the lead cops, but tune in for the voices of Nick Offerman, Jenny Slate, Fred Armisen and Kim Basinger, among others. Now streaming on Amazon.
Global Swarming: Sharknado 5
Shark Week may be over, but there's still plenty of delightfully bad creature features to enjoy. The fifth installment of the wildly popular Sharknado franchise, Global Swarming, sees the world bracing for a worldwide shark-infested storm. And this year, the mission gets personal for chainsaw-wielding Fin Shepard (Ian Ziering) and his bionic wife, April (Tara Reid), when their son gets trapped in a sharknado. Naturally, the two find that the origins of the shark-meets-tornado are found in cave drawings and ancient hieroglyphics. They'll have to solve the mystery of why sharknados occur in order to save the world. Oh, and Fabio plays the pope and Charo plays the queen of England. 8 p.m. Sunday, Syfy.
Hard Knocks: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
This season, the reality sports documentary series Hard Knocks takes a deep dive into Tampa Bay's own Bucs. The five-episode season from HBO Sports and NFL Films premieres Tuesday. NFL Films senior executive Ross Ketover said this in a release teasing the season: "The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have everything we look for when it comes to Hard Knocks: a young dynamic team filled with big names; an experienced coaching staff focused on taking their squad to the next level; and high expectations in a division that has represented the NFC in the past two Super Bowls." For the past few months, cameras have followed the team through 1,500 hours of practices and meetings, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of players and coaches in their everyday lives. 10 p.m. Tuesday, HBO.
