Winner and loser of the week in pop culture featuring that movie about stars and wars, plus alleged breast biter Azealia Banks
Star Wars. The Force awakened a ton of presales, to the tune of the latest installment likely surpassing the $100 million mark of tickets sold before its release date. That would be a major record, blowing away current title holder The Dark Knight Rises, which brought in $25 million in advance ticket sales. Disney wouldn’t comment on the outpouring of cash earlier in the week, but the Hollywood Reporter’s insiders projected that presales could surpass $125 million, and Fandango said The Force Awakens became the top-selling flick in its 15-year history before it even opened. The big question: Will Episode VII beat out Jurassic World, which brought in $208.8 million domestically on opening weekend? Initial figures suggested Star Wars’ early Thursday box office haul was the largest ever at $57 million (previous record $43.5 million by 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2), so it seems likely.
Azealia Banks. The 24-year-old rapper was arrested in New York City in the wee hours of Wednesday after allegedly biting a nightclub security guard on the breast. Banks showed up to a club owner’s private birthday party without an invitation. After screaming and slinging racial slurs, an owner let her in. But that wasn’t enough. Page Six sources say Banks was angry that she wasn’t recognized as a celebrity, so she continued to berate security, bit a female guard in the breast, was tossed out, brought police to the scene and then allegedly punched the security guard in clear view. Banks was charged with third-degree assault, disorderly conduct and harassment. It’s a shame she hasn’t learned from her prior profanity-laden attacks on unsuspecting employees.
