Winner and loser of the week: Jesse Williams wins at the BET Awards; Chris Brown in trouble (again)
Jesse Williams. Once upon a time, Jesse Williams came to our St. Petersburg office to tape segments for the upcoming documentary miniseries America Divided. He was standing in the lobby. Our eyes met. We fell in love. (Note: We didn't actually fall in love, but I'm sure we would have been very happy together.) He was a winner in our eyes then, and Sunday's BET awards show proved that. The Grey's Anatomy star had the most talked about moment of the night after he gave an epic speech when he accepted this year's humanitarian award. Williams managed to outshine a performance by Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar when he called for an end to police violence and cultural appropriation. "This is for the real organizers all over the country. The activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers, the students, that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do," he said in his speech. He ended by saying "Just because we're magic doesn't mean we're not real. Thank you." No, thank you, Jesse Williams.
Chris Brown. Surprise, Surprise. The singer had a run-in with the cops this week when he rented a villa in Ibiza and apparently trashed the place. According to the police report obtained by TMZ, Brown or a member of his squad threw knives at the wall. KNIVES. The landlord also said someone peed the bed and there was vomit "everywhere." 1. That's gross. 2. How are you going to invite groupies back to a pee-stenched, knife-filled torture playhouse? Brown only rented the house for one week, and the landlord is now claiming $60,000 with damages. How do you rack up that much damage in one week, dude? To top off Brown's loser week, he is also being sued by rap producer Suge Knight over a 2014 Los Angeles club shooting that left him with seven gunshot wounds. Brown is being sued along with the club's owners for failing to provide enough security for the event. Side note: Knight is in jail for a murder charge. So I guess he's a loser, too.
