Unsafe Stork Craft cribs recalled -- again
Back in January, a Canadian company called Stork-craft had to recall 1-million of its cribs because they posed a potential suffocation hazard. The problem: the metal support brackets used to support the crib mattress and mattress board could crack and break.
Now Stork Craft is recalling millions of its cribs again, this time for a different reason. This new Stork Craft recall is prompted by problems with the drop side of the crib - problems considered so dangerous that parents are being advised to immediately stop using the crib and find a safer place for their children to sleep.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the cribs’ drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or parts can become missing. That can cause the drop-side to detach in one or more corners. When the drop-side detaches, it creates space between the drop-side and the crib mattress, and children can become trapped in between. The commission and its Canadian counterpart have documented 110 incidents of drop-side detachment, four of which resulted in children suffocating.
The recall involves more than 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including about 147,000 Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. If you have one of these cribs, call Stork Craft toll free at 1-877-274-0277 contact them via e-mail at parts@storkcraft.com.

Freelance writer Courtney Cairns Pastor wasn’t so sure about having kids and how she would balance child-rearing with her journalism career. It turned out that her journalism training went to good use. As the mom to a funny, active toddler, she learned to handle him like she did her sources. Never ask yes or no questions (the answer will always be no), get him to be specific (are you crying because you’re wet or your tooth hurts?) and be prepared for anything because no two days are the same. When she’s not playing trucks, Courtney crams for her book club, trains for races and occasionally bursts into showtunes. E-mail her at
