Oscars for Mommas: Thank goodness 'Up' is nominated
Was just in a conversation on Facebook that somehow wandered into the world of kids movies. My husband and I make no secret that we are huge fans of Phineas and Ferb. We actually watched Bugs Bunny cartoons during one of our first dates. So when I posted a comment wondering if I had seen any of the Oscar-nominated films this year, I thought I had not. But then I remembered that I have seen Up (for Best Picture and Animated Feature Film) and The Princess and the Frog (also Best Animated Feature).
Okay, I need to get out of this rut.
Here's the way to do it but I have to find someone to watch the kids. Over two Saturdays -- Feb. 27 and March 6 (the day before the Oscars), AMC Theatres will show all 10 Best Picture candidates. In the bay area, you can see the films beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Veterans 24, 9302 Anderson Road, Tampa. The popcorn is free and you can have unlimited refills (but I might suggest water instead -- that's a lot of soda). A two-day pass is $50 ($60 online). A one-day pass is $30. Go to the AMC Website for all the details. Here's the schedule:
Feb. 27
10:30 a.m. AVATAR (3D)
1:45 p.m. Up (shown in 2D)*
3:45 p.m. A Serious Man
6:30 p.m. Precious
8:45 p.m. District 9
March 6
10:30 a.m. An Education
12:45 p.m. The Hurt Locker
3:15 p.m. Up in the Air
6 p.m. The Blind Side
8:30 p.m. Inglourious Basterds

Sharon Kennedy Wynne has sunscreen in her blood. She may have been born in Buffalo but she got here as fast as she could, in time for kindergarten. She grew up in St. Petersburg, graduated from the University of Florida journalism school, and even got married at Sunken Gardens. She's one of the few adults we know who actually loves taking her kids to the beach. She has two sons and with 10 years of parenting under her belt, she's starting to feel a little less out of her league. She comes from a large family and loves to debate, so brace yourself when the hot topics come up.

Freelance writer Courtney Cairns Pastor wasn’t so sure about having kids and how she would balance child-rearing with her journalism career. It turned out that her journalism training went to good use. As the mom to a funny, active toddler, she learned to handle him like she did her sources. Never ask yes or no questions (the answer will always be no), get him to be specific (are you crying because you’re wet or your tooth hurts?) and be prepared for anything because no two days are the same. When she’s not playing trucks, Courtney crams for her book club, trains for races and occasionally bursts into showtunes. E-mail her at
