Pasco mom dishes advice on Disney Moms Panel

Suzannah DiMarzio w characters A Wesley Chapel mom has put her lifelong love affair with Disney to practical use, landing a plumb spot on the Walt Disney World Moms Panel, dispensing advice in exchange for a free vacation and beating out more than 10,000 other rabid Mouse Fans.

Suzannah DiMarzio, 36, said it felt like getting on the Disney Moms Panel was harder than getting into Harvard. But now it's from her mouth to Mickey's ears after she landed a spot on the theme park’s website fielding questions from newbie Disney visitors.

In an ingenious use of social media, Disney is in its second year of using a volunteer corps of customer service moms to dish out advice on a range of questions, from restaurants to age-appropriate rides to advice on stroller rentals. In its first year, the cap of 10,000 applications for the two dozens spots was filled in a matter of days. This year, they’ve expanded the board to 43 parents who receive vacation packages or park hopper passes, depending on how much time they put in.

DiMarzio is a former travel agent who grew up in the Ocala area and spent a college summer as a Disney “cast member,” sweating it out in Victorian starched collars and long polyester skirts in the shops on Main Street USA. Now she’s a mom of three kids, ages 11, 9 and 17 months old, so she’s still haunting the place.

“I didn’t realize the best part would be meeting the other people involved in the Moms Panel,” said the grown woman who has the Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me) theme song from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride on her cell phone’s hold music.  “We developed an instant bond, and not just for our love of Disney.”

She filled out an essay and aced a followup phone call, likely because she maintains her own Disney fan blog called ZannaLand and had already spent a lot of time dispensing advice on her own. Her stint on the panel is from  April to June and she spends a few hours every day answering questions.

“Some of them take some time to research,” said. “They will ask questions like what should we do on this date to make it special, or what’s best for a child under 1, so sometimes I have to do some research to make sure I’m giving them the right answer.”

Her go-to Disney tips: Always pack ponchos for those unexpected Florida rainstorms and pony up for a character meal because it beats waiting in long lines in the heat to get a picture of your kid with a character.

Is she free to give her unvarnished opinion on what the Mouse offers? “So they say,” she answers carefully, “I haven’t tested it.”

Sharon Kennedy Wynne has sunscreen in her blood. She may have been born in Buffalo but she got here as fast as she could, in time for kindergarten. She grew up in St. Petersburg, graduated from the University of Florida journalism school, and even got married at Sunken Gardens. She's one of the few adults we know who actually loves taking her kids to the beach. She has two sons and with 10 years of parenting under her belt, she's starting to feel a little less out of her league. She comes from a large family and loves to debate, so brace yourself when the hot topics come up.

SP_255665_CROS_KATE.jpgAfter six long years of trying to have a baby, Kate Brassfield was finally able to have one. And then, two minutes later, another one. Suddenly the lady who had never been around babies before was juggling two! Just as Kate felt she was getting pretty good with babies, the girls became toddlers, and now Kate is back to Square One, learning about the care and feeding of these strange, wonderful creatures. She spends her days working part-time from home and trying to keep up with the Twinosaurus Wrecks.

Freelance writer Courtney Cairns Pastor wasn’t so sure about having kids and how she would balance child-rearing with her journalism career. It turned out that her journalism training went to good use. As the mom to a funny, active toddler, she learned to handle him like she did her sources. Never ask yes or no questions (the answer will always be no), get him to be specific (are you crying because you’re wet or your tooth hurts?) and be prepared for anything because no two days are the same. When she’s not playing trucks, Courtney crams for her book club, trains for races and occasionally bursts into showtunes. E-mail her at courtneyblogs@gmail.com.

Suzannah DiMarzio has it bad for the Mouse. Although she grew up outside of Boston, she took her degree in tourism management down to Orlando just to work at Disney and the travel industry. Of course, when she married her high school sweetheart, the reception was at Disney. She’s now a seasoned stay-at-home mom to two tweens and a toddler – and yes, that is as crazy as it sounds. Suzannah has her own blog, ZannaLand.com , and she's a member of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel in addition to being addicted to Twitter, iced coffee, and watching way too much Yo, Gabba Gabba.
