What should we do with bullies?
I am so depressed at the news of another teen killing herself to escape bullying. We just had a similar case in the Tampa Bay area. Now comes the news of a kid who was charged with bringing knives to school, but here's the clincher: She did it to ward off bullies.
Considering the dramatic reactions, what are we to do with this? Bullying in some respect is a right of passage, but when you add in the Internet element and the barrage that can result when Facebook, Twitter and e-mail can create a virtual pile-on, it gets overwhelming for a kid. ... Read more

Outfitting a Tween for Easter
My parents have temporary custody of two 10-year-old girls, my cousins whose mother is deployed in Kosovo. In addition to re-entering the world of parenting school-aged children, my parents also have inherited responsibilities of the fashion kind. The girls are fraternal twins. One girl is a petite, girls 14. The other girl is a bit taller and has grown into a girls 18 – if such a size existed. In most cases, it does not. For the uninitiated, girls’ sizes traditionally stop at 16. Then, they are expected to transition into the juniors’ department.
And therein lies the problem.

Quote of the Day: Donny Osmond slams Lady Gaga's "Telephone" video
"I'm all for freedom of speech and against any form of censorship, but all I know is that I'm a parent and
I'm upset about this. ... I wouldn't want my child to watch this video. Would you? What do you think? Should these two extremely gifted female role models for millions of young girls, maybe, have given a little more thought to the effect it might have on their core audience?" ... Read more

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Web site has a banner up that says the attraction, a $200 million addition to the Universal Studios Orlando theme parks, will open June 18 at Islands of Adventure. When we got the first update on the park back in May, there was plenty of interesting detail about what would be there. ... Read more

Sharon Kennedy Wynne has sunscreen in her blood. She may have been born in Buffalo but she got here as fast as she could, in time for kindergarten. She grew up in St. Petersburg, graduated from the University of Florida journalism school, and even got married at Sunken Gardens. She's one of the few adults we know who actually loves taking her kids to the beach. She has two sons and with 10 years of parenting under her belt, she's starting to feel a little less out of her league. She comes from a large family and loves to debate, so brace yourself when the hot topics come up.

Freelance writer Courtney Cairns Pastor wasn’t so sure about having kids and how she would balance child-rearing with her journalism career. It turned out that her journalism training went to good use. As the mom to a funny, active toddler, she learned to handle him like she did her sources. Never ask yes or no questions (the answer will always be no), get him to be specific (are you crying because you’re wet or your tooth hurts?) and be prepared for anything because no two days are the same. When she’s not playing trucks, Courtney crams for her book club, trains for races and occasionally bursts into showtunes. E-mail her at
