Circus opens today with dragon theme
Our colleague Susan Thurston got a sneak peek at Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus show opening today and running through Sunday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. The theme this year is Dragons since 2012 is the year of the dragon. Acts revolve around strength, courage, wisdom and heart — traits required to summon the dragon. Costumes, props and music focus on having the spirit of the dragon live in you. It's a little hokey, to be sure, but kids will soak it up. We won't ruin the ending, except to say it's pretty big. Here is a rundown of the show's highlights: ... Read more
Rainy day (and hot day) fun
We veterans of Florida summers know that August has a lot of similarities to January in Chicago. People don't go outside much on some days because of the weather.
We've had a couple of all-rain days lately and we certainly have plenty where it's too hot to think about taking the kids outside for very long. So what do you do for rainy-day fun? We rounded up this list of all the indoor fun zones in the bay area. Skating rinks, bowling alleys, trampoline parks, jump zones, we seem to have a lot.
A check of articles on how to get through snow days gives me some good ideas for hot weather activities: ... Read more
Date night, with kids in tow
Our Weekend section recently did a fun package on 5 playful date night ideas , beyond the ho-hum dinner and a movie. You had your horse-back riding sporty date, your hanging out at the beach date, your music lovers date. But for moms, the idea of a date night with kids probably seems like an oxymoron.
Still, I liked where writer Stephanie Hayes went with this: fun, light and easy: ... Read more
What age to let a kid go to Halloween nights at a theme park?
I will admit getting judgey on the parents I hear dragging little terrified kids around the Halloween horrors at Busch Gardens or Universal when signs all around clearly say this is not for little kids. Just this week Busch Gardens and Universal revealed their Halloween themes for this year: Zombies vs. Morphing Aliens. That's just some of the heart-stopping, scream-inducing frights planned for the annual Halloween extravaganzas at Busch Gardens (zombies) and Universal Studios in Orlando (aliens) this year. ... How to cool off in a theme park
I will never understand why Florida residents go to theme parks this time of year. I know it's more convenient for school schedules but between the crowds and the heat, I'm waiting till October. But if you have visitors or you simply can't resist the charms of castles (or you have an annual pass burning a hole in your pocket) I simply must point out this helpful blog post from Busch Gardens on how to stay cool when everything around you is swampy.
Among the suggestions:
Seek out the wet rides like Congo River Rapids, Stanley Falls Flume, and Tanganyika Tidal Wave. The Rapids are especially good at delivering a soaking in my experience. ... Read more
How to make the most of a museum visit
I got a newsletter this week from the Suncoast Waldorf School and one article that caught my eye was this one on how to visit a museum or historic site without overwhelming the kids. The focus, they say, should be on letting a kid learn and discover on their own without cramming them full of fast facts as you race around. I liked the reminder not to "over-answer" any questions. Let them struggle a bit and find out the answers for themselves. Here's what they say:
Summertime is fast approaching and many parents and children have opportunities to visit museums, historic villages/settlements, and other vacations that include facts and information. Is this too much information? How do we allow our young children, tweens, and teens to enjoy these fascinating places of interest without overwhelming them with too many facts and sights?
Follow Your Child's Lead: My suggestion is to simply walk around the museum in a normal way and see what comments and questions naturally arise from your children. With my children, I have avoided any graphic or disturbing pictures or displays. This may sound too obvious, but sometimes you have to be really quick when a display pops up (which sometimes has me questioning what the managers of the exhibit could have been thinking...or not thinking). ... 'Motherhood the Musical' nurses laughs
Like a coffee klatch set to music, Motherhood the Musical has all the well-trod gripes and blessings of motherhood set in a musical baby shower.
From the producers of Menopause: The Musical, which has enjoyed a long run around the world for tapping into everywoman experiences, this one seems aimed at the same, "We've all been there," funny bone.
Most of the songs are original, even if the material they cover isn't. There's shopping at Costco, the joy of epidurals (Good Drugs set to the tune of Good Love), minivans, baby weight blues, stretch marks, sagging breasts, hemorrhoids and leaking when you sneeze. Ah, good times. And the songs did indeed bring roars of recognition from the audience in the small theater. ... Read more
Do you set some goals for kids summer activities?
I really loved Tracey Henry's blog post on healthy eating this summer when she makes a comparison of the start of summer to New Year's Day, when we set some resolutions. Does anyone else start the summer with the best of intensions (Be it resolved: We will learn to tie shoes well this summer) only to find yourselves racing around in the last weeks of August (Where can we find Velcro sneakers in the bigger sizes?).
We have some goals we set. I don't necessarily think the school should assign work but it might make it easier for the parents to enforce if they can point to the school as the bad guy. The problem is summer is a time for chucking routines. How can we sneak in some learning activities and goals without making it look like Mommy Boot Camp?
Our goals: ... Read more
Addictive Easter memory game, plus tips
Kudos to our colleague Desiree Perry, an illustrator and multimedia designer for TampaBay.com, who came up with this fun Easter Candy Memory Game and also loaded in lots of Easter-related information on the page like recipes, Easter basket tips, sure-fire hard-boiled eggs. My productivity took a nose-dive the other day when I discovered it. She may have meant it for the kids, but I'm kind of competitive with stuff like this. My best record on solving the puzzle has been 33 clicks. Beat that!

A search tool for summer camps
Go ahead and call me a shill for the company, I can stand it. But I just have to point out that the advertiser-sponsored interactive summer camp guide is pretty darn useful. As I have long complained, the biggest hurdle for finding the right fit is just know what's out there. Lifelong friends turn secretive for fear you will take up the last spots in their favorite camps.
So on a lark, I logged on to the site just to see what was there and I was pleasantly surprised. I entered a city near me and found dozens of ones I'd never heard of. My only quibble is it would be nice to have the hours and price on each one to save me having to make a phone call, but is better than me begging all my Facebook friends to clue me in.
