Should parents feel the sting of cuts as much as teachers?
Our friends at the Gradebook blog have an interesting story on the issue of teachers forced to take unpaid furloughs to make up for budget shortfalls. The teachers union in Pasco County has thrown up the idea that at least one of the district's mandatory unpaid leave days should take place on a school day. That way budget cuts affect kids and parents too, and not just employees. If it falls on a Wednesday, parents will have to take a day off work or get a sitter and then maybe they'll feel the same pain as the teachers and speak up when it comes to school funding. But if they make the furlough day Dec. 22, it will simply be one more day in the winter break and will go by unnoticed.
I gotta say, I kind of like this. Even though, as a working mom, this would cost me a huge amount of hassle, maybe that's a good thing. If a teacher is taking an unpaid day of work, maybe I should feel a little more discomfort when the school is closed so that these school budget talks hit closer to home. ... Read more
Diverse cast of superheroes coming to comics
It was fascinating to read this article by our colleague Eric Deggans on the new array of black, brown and gay superheroes that will be arriving to newsstands while DC Comics simultaneously reboots 52 different titles in its catalog. The project is called the New 52, and it's an ambitious effort by DC Comics to reimagine some of its best-known comic books in an effort to draw in new fans, starting or restarting 52 different series at once with Number One issues publishing this month.
While most attention goes to marquee names such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, a cadre of writers and artists are developing characters of color and a gay woman as superhero stars in six new books — some for the very first time. Among them, Deggans reports, are: ... Read more
What school supplies do you love (or hate)?
Now that we are all up to our ears in school stuff and still making last-minute runs to fill up on supplies (No pronged notebooks available in a 50-mile radius? Really?) it got me nostalgic for my old Trapper Keeper and wondering what school supplies have landed on your must list, or your must-destroy list.
So let's break it down to Stuff We Love and Stuff We Hate. Let me get the debate started:
Stuff I Love
Crayola sent me a box of their new school innovations to test out and the one my son's third-grade teacher loves is their Dry Erase Crayons. This is a great innovation because it seems like every teacher these days is begging for extra dry erase markers. They lose their caps, the ink dries out and the teacher sometimes digs into her own pocket to replenish the supply thanks to school budget cuts. These babies work on dry erase boards, they don't smell and they don't run out of ink! It's $3.99 for a pack of 8. ... Read more
A teacher (and mom) offers tips on saving on school supplies
There's some great tips and advice in this story by our colleague Marlene Sokol on how to save money when shopping for school supplies. Marlene brought in a great adviser: Lissette Godwin, a mother of three who is also a curriculum specialist for the Hillsborough County School District. Two of her kids are in high school, the youngest is entering fifth grade, and she has 15 years of experience as a classroom teacher. Much of that time was in kindergarten, where crayons vanish by Christmas and glue sticks are always in demand. She has back-to-school shopping down to a science.
This advice is timely with the Florida sales tax holiday coming up this weekend. You may want to get up to speed on new tweaks to Florida's tax holiday. This guide by business writer Mark Albright makes it clearer. The price for qualifying clothing and school supplies has gone up, but books have been taken off the list. Even though the state loses $30 million in sales taxes during the holiday, retailers say in the end it gets more back because people buy other items while they are out shopping.
We've already started some of our shopping because last year, I made the mistake of waiting until the last minute and the store was sold out of some of the items I needed. Godwin endorsed that idea in Marlene's story, but cautioned that one of the big mistakes parents make is buying up things that they may not need. ... Read more
Bagging lunch just got easier
Tired of spending a fortune in takeout lunches? I had to pass on this discovery I made: Like Lunchables for adults, Easy Lunch Boxes make it, well, easy, and I've been finding that I look forward to toting my lunch to work. Come fall, my third grader will be using this as well. I know I'm sounding like Billy Mays, but I was not given this product. I saw it and bought it and wanted to give props to the mom inventor who came up with this easy system.
I have long admired the crafty moms who whip up bento creations to make lunch interesting and nutritious. But I'm a slacker, and I know I will never muster the organization and creativity it takes to make cheese in the shape of birds or rabbit-shaped apple wedges. Just. Not. Happening. Still, you can't do an article on people who make bento lunches without being affected while packing lunches. ... Read more
Disney, Universal, Busch Gardens hike prices this year
As our colleague Mark Albright reports, Universal is joining Disney in hiking up theme park prices this year. The business types spin it this way: It's a sign of optimism about Florida tourism that Universal Orlando matched Walt Disney World by raising its daily admission to $85 and escalating multiday pass prices by bigger margins. Yay! Optimism! Who's with me? *crickets*
Hoo boy, I always feel like I've been shaken down by the mob when I fork over big bucks for theme park tickets. They know you'll pay anything to make your kid happy, So whattaya gonna do about it my friend? Now take the mouse ears before I do somethin' I might regret. Capiche? ... Read more
New Wii controller worth the price of Motion game
A product landed in my mailbox to test this week. Since it's Wii Play: Motion, that means this review and advice comes from my kids and neighbors, not from me. The newest Wii remote software bundle from Nintendo is a collection of mini-games bundled with a nifty black Wii remote (or Wiimote as the company is trying to get us all to call it) with Wii MotionPlus built in. The game, at $49.99 is only $10 more than the cost of a standalone Wii remote so the bundle is a deal. ... Read more
Great idea! A financial camp for teens
I love, love, love this idea from the Hillsborough County Extension office: a financial camp for teens, ages 13-16, that features hands-on learning activities dealing with credit, banking, car buying, and job searches and interviewing. They are also throwing in fun afternoon field trips like bowling, visit MOSI and play miniature golf. We are talking about teenagers after all.
But I really hope anyone out there with the resources copies this idea and spreads it far and wide. The financial illiteracy in this country is a big reason we are coming out of one of the worst recessions in history.
Here's what you need to know if you want to sign up your free-spending teen for this camp: ... Read more
Companies bet parents won't pinch pennies for baby
Are parents suckers for products regardless of price? The news came out yesterday that the makers of both Pampers and Huggies will raise the price of diapers, blaming increased commodities' costs. The Wall Street Journal notes that the companies are betting that parents are less likely to be stingy when it comes to junior's needs. Is it a good bet? Or will we turn to generic or roll up our sleeves and use cloth? ... Read more
