Baby Cafe hosts 'Celebration of Breastfeeding'

breastfeeding.jpgI knew when I got pregnant that I wanted to breastfeed. I just didn’t expect it to be so hard. I took a class. I read a book. I met with several lactation consultants at the hospital. I bought gear (I will spare you the details). And I still wanted to quit -- the first day, the second day, and a lot of days after.

Baby Cafe gets this. And it has managed to make the experience better for 450 moms.

Funded by the Healthy Start Coalition, Tampa’s Baby Cafe links certified lactation consultants with new mothers. Some have babies in the NICU and need breast pumps so they can provide their infants with breastmilk when they’re not there. Some struggle with latching and holds. Some have babies with the scary diagnosis of “failure to thrive” and need to know how to make sure their newborns get enough milk and start putting on weight.

Check out their website here for all they offer. It’s all free, too. ... Read more

A marathon for moms -- but in cyberspace

joggermom.jpgTo get us moving together, a marathon is planned for moms, but it's online. You have to run 26.2 miles in the month of May, which is a mile a day, or 6.2 miles a week, and you can win prizes from the random drawing.

It's free. The idea is get the moms moving, and I think a flexible schedule like this is right up our alley. Get those jog strollers lubed up, mommas!

Tampa moms combat teen text-driving

bumper.jpgI loved this story by our colleague Tia Mitchell on the Tampa moms who came up with a business aimed at curbing teens' texting while driving. The best weapon: Telling the kid's mother! Parents buy bumper stickers from icudrive.com and place them on their teenagers' cars. The stickers feature a phone number and encourage other drivers to report any unsafe behavior they observe.

Other companies have similar programs, such companies include GoTellMom.com, SteerStraight.com and HowsMyTeenDriving.net, with services that cost between $39.95 to $120 annually. ICUDrive costs $97.99 a year. ... Read more

Tampa Bay moms hope to run amazing online race

supermoms.jpgA couple of Tampa Bay moms are piling up Facebook friends and Twitter followers to embark on a web-based reality show from the producers of The Amazing Race.

Melanie Ellis, 33, at left, of Lithia and Kristen Previtera, 41, of Valrico have formed the team "SuperMoms" and are finalists in Ford's search  for teams to compete in Focus Rally: America. The teams will take on Amazing Race-style challenges driving a Ford Focus across the country for five weeks. The trick is they have to leverage their social network to complete. The winning team will receive a $100,000 prize and a new car.

They answered a casting call at Jackson's Bistro last month and within a few days they had a second call to meet with casting directors in Orlando and by week's end had an email congratuling them on being finalists. Now they have to get their social network humming. ... Read more

Meet Kate, our new Momma blogger

We are thrilled to have our friend Kate Brassfield joining the mom bloggers here on Whoa, Momma! Here's her first post. --Eds.

Ahhhh. The Little Monkey and the Koala Bear are asleep at last. I have a short while to eat, straighten up the living room, make formula, and catch a few NFL highlights before falling asleep myself. Tomorrow begins another crazy week in the Brassfield house.

Some of you may remember my name and my story: I shared my husband's and my struggle to have a baby with Times readers, the first installment in 2007 and the "sequel" this year on Mother's Day. We always knew we wanted to have a family. We just didn't know how long it would take to get there, how close to the limit we would be pushed, how much it would cost. But we always knew it would be wonderful. It would be worth it.

Fourteen months in, I can say for sure: We were right.

As treatment after treatment failed, we swore that when it finally worked, we would never complain about having kids. ... Read more

THE AUTHORS

Sharon Kennedy Wynne has sunscreen in her blood. She may have been born in Buffalo but she got here as fast as she could, in time for kindergarten. She grew up in St. Petersburg, graduated from the University of Florida journalism school, and even got married at Sunken Gardens. She's one of the few adults we know who actually loves taking her kids to the beach. She has two sons and with 10 years of parenting under her belt, she's starting to feel a little less out of her league. She comes from a large family and loves to debate, so brace yourself when the hot topics come up.

SP_255665_CROS_KATE.jpgAfter six long years of trying to have a baby, Kate Brassfield was finally able to have one. And then, two minutes later, another one. Suddenly the lady who had never been around babies before was juggling two! Just as Kate felt she was getting pretty good with babies, the girls became toddlers, and now Kate is back to Square One, learning about the care and feeding of these strange, wonderful creatures. She spends her days working part-time from home and trying to keep up with the Twinosaurus Wrecks.

Freelance writer Courtney Cairns Pastor wasn’t so sure about having kids and how she would balance child-rearing with her journalism career. It turned out that her journalism training went to good use. As the mom to a funny, active toddler, she learned to handle him like she did her sources. Never ask yes or no questions (the answer will always be no), get him to be specific (are you crying because you’re wet or your tooth hurts?) and be prepared for anything because no two days are the same. When she’s not playing trucks, Courtney crams for her book club, trains for races and occasionally bursts into showtunes. E-mail her at courtneyblogs@gmail.com.

Suzannah DiMarzio has it bad for the Mouse. Although she grew up outside of Boston, she took her degree in tourism management down to Orlando just to work at Disney and the travel industry. Of course, when she married her high school sweetheart, the reception was at Disney. She’s now a seasoned stay-at-home mom to two tweens and a toddler – and yes, that is as crazy as it sounds. Suzannah has her own blog, ZannaLand.com , and she's a member of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel in addition to being addicted to Twitter, iced coffee, and watching way too much Yo, Gabba Gabba.
