Easy self-esteem builder: Make resolutions with kids
Our colleague Irene Maher has some great tips in her article here on how to help your kids set some New Year's resolutions. As she notes, "the new year provides a good opportunity for kids to take a personal assessment — how things are going for them at home, at school, with their friends, their physical fitness — and see if they'd like to make improvements." The benefit of resolution-making for children is that it builds self confidence and self esteem. It gives them a sense of accomplishment. In the end, it helps make them thoughtful, productive citizens. That means it helps keep them out of trouble later in life. ... Read more
Looking for some great holiday light displays?
This is sure to start an argument, picking your favorite holiday lights display. Sure there’s the famously unrefined Oakdale (Kresge house) in St. Petersburg or the over-the-top Chik-fil-A (at 6299 W. Waters Ave. in Tampa the lights surrounding the parking lot are synchronized to holiday music and there's often carolers and even movies on display) But here are some other picks for must-see Christmas displays during the holiday season. When you’re out of cash or have visiting relatives to entertain, consider checking one of these out: ... Read more
What's your Christmas morning game plan?
Christmas morning may look like a breezy time on the Hallmark cards, but it can be meltdown-worthy mess if you aren't careful. Toys packed in vacuum sealed plastic "clamshells" that require a jackhammer to open. No batteries. No breakfast ready. The coffee isn't ready and you REALLY need it, the camera's batteries aren't charged.
Face it, Mommas, you need a survival kit. Here's what's in mine: ... Read more
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, starts Tuesday
Hanukkah runs Tuesday evening through Dec. 28, and the Chabad of St. Petersburg kicks off the "eight crazy nights," (as Adam Sandlers would say) with a giant menorah lighting in Straub Park at 5:30 p.m. in St. Pete, with an acrobatics show by Liang Patti.
That same night the free Hanukkah on Ice party for families brings classic Hanukkah songs to the Countryside Mall ice rink in Clearwater, as well as doughnuts, latkes and a giant menorah lighting at 6:30. The skating is free but you have to RSVP at yichabad.com or call (727) 789-0408.
Other community events include a menorah lighting at Hyde Park Village in South Tampa Wednesday at 6 p.m. and a giant popcorn menorah, with dancing, singing, a juggling show and food on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Surf Style Mega Store, 311 S Gulfview Blvd., Clearwater Beach. ... Read more
How do you make sure kids get equal presents?
When you have more than one kid, you no doubt have this dilemma. Should the kids' Christmas presents be equal in price? Equal in amount? Or should you just not worry if it all comes out equal?
A mom on here once suggested wrapping the presents 1-to-1. It might mean you can't wrap as you'd like, but by doing it that way, you are assured they generally come out to the same number of packages under the tree.
I don't think equal spending is nessarily a good guide, especially with little kids who won't go price-checking, unless you tell them what you spent and why would you do that? While I wouldn't get a $2 gift for one child and a $200 gift for the others, I don't see a need to make sure it equalizes down to the penny. We try to get the kids something they really like, and this might mean one is more expensive or bigger.
The way I see it, fair and equal are totally unrelated. ... Read more

Gift ideas for teachers, nannies and child care providers
As you think about the people who help you raise great kids please avoid at all cost the "gifts for teacher" aisle with its apple-related knickknacks, apple-themed jewelry and we beg you, put the coffee mug down. They have tons of them. Instead, think about a nice warm thank you note and maybe throw in some cash or a gift card for movies, coffee or groceries.
A teacher once wrote to me to agree with this advice saying, "Every thank you note that I have ever gotten from a parent or student is in a pile in my drawer, and when I need a boost, I do go back and read them again." Talk about the gift that keeps on giving!
Here's some other gift ideas we have gathered over the years that teachers and child care providers tell us are most appreciated: ... Read more
What's your favorite Christmas cookie?
Mommas, start your ovens! It's baking time again, and if you need some ideas or have a cookie exchange coming up, check out the hall-of-famers from the annual cookie report compiled by our colleague Janet Keeler.
I've struggled with finding the right annual Christmas cookie in our house because, in my opinion, chocolate chip is not a Christmas cookie. That's an everyday cookie, though fabulous. A Christmas cookie needs to be spiced or nutty or layered or decorated. It only comes out this time of year. But then you get finicky young tastebuds, and my attempts to woo them from the chocolate chip have so far fallen flat. ... Read more
Shop for secondhand toys and save big $$$
Our colleague Mark Wood has a great article on how he has perfected the art of toy shopping at yard sales, thrift stores and secondhand shops. He's found a $30 Transformers Optimus Prime Voice Changer Helmet for $3 and a $55 Fisher-Price Imaginext Batcave for free because the owner of the yard sale he was shopping said she simply wanted to clean her son's room out and handed him a yard bag full of toys.
He's on the lookout all year and he knows how to order replacement parts, do minor repairs and check for recalls. Luckily for us, he's willing to give out his secrets. Here are his tools and shopping tips for scoring a slew of secondhand toys for pennies on the dollar:
Tools of the trade
Secondhand items often need a little TLC — repairs, even a bath. Have these things handy to make toys ready for play. ... Read more
