Mommas, is that kid drinking beer at the Trop?
Hey Mommas, thought you might want to venture over to the Tom Jones' 2-cents blog where there is a discussion going on about whether or not a kid was actually drinking a beer at a recent Rays game. Some folks claim it's a hoax. Others wonder what's the big deal. Well, if it's really a beer and if that's really a kid, it's illegal. But go take a look and decide for yourself.
Togetherville brings kids together online -- but why?
Okay, my headline gives away my bias. Between all the television, texting and cell phone use, computer use and video games that kids are already wrapped up in, along comes Togetherville -- or as I like to think of it, the candy cigarettes of online social networking. ... Read more
Padded bikini tops for kids -- outrageous!
Well, I'll give the makers of the padded bikini bras for kids credit for taking them off store shelves in
the UK. But you have to wonder, why would a girl as young as 7 need a padded bra? Not sure why anyone would think this was a good idea except maybe the mom who gives her teenage daughter Botox injections or parents who think dressing your daughter in sexy clothes, even at Halloween, is okay. ... New Mommas, do YOU need some sleep?
Whoever came up with the expression, "sleeps like a baby'' must never have had kids. Because if he or she did, they would know that getting a baby to sleep can be quite a challenge, especially early on.Shari Mezrah knows this well. After her first child was born, she was aghast when he didn't go to sleep every night at 8. Where was the instruction manual?

Study finds an abstinence-only sex class that works
On the news that teen pregnancy took a slight uptick in recent years, some blamed the abstinence-only sex education programs of the Bush years (not to mention a certain family from Alaska, as well as the siblings of certain pop singers). Now comes a study that found signs of success in an abstinence program, but there's a big caveat: They have to leave out the preaching. ... Read more
Can you legislate parenting?
A legislator from South Florida is pushing a law that would make it illegal for anyone under 16 to get a tattoo and would require parents to show up in person to give consent to anyone under 18 getting inked. Last week, South Florida Rep. Mary Brandenburg unveiled the legislation, which includes extra safety measures to combat the high rate of hepatitis infections from tattoos.
There are no age limits for tattoos in Florida, but parental or guardian consent is required for minors, under current statute. ... Read more
Twilight Barbie dolls beg the question: Vampires are now playtime fun?
Wow, we've come a long way in the doll world. When Totally Stylin' Tattoo Barbie came out earlier this year, some Mommas thought that might be a bit over the top. Then another outrageous doll -- dubbed Sugar Daddy Ken -- had people ranting all over the blogosphere last week, although I couldn't find anything on him on the Mattel site, making me wonder if it was for real. ... Mom arrested for dropping kids off at the mall
This mom's essay is heartbreaking about the ordeal she went through because she let her kids spend an afternoon in a suburban Montana mall.
In a nutshell, her older daughter, 12, and her best friend, also 12, were in charge of the younger kids, ages 7, 8 and 3. They were told the rules: They must behave, never let the kids out of their sight and the 3 year old had to stay in the stroller. She dropped them off at 1:45 to have lunch and walk about a bit and she'd pick them up at 4. ... Read more
