Chuck E. Cheese: Where a kid can be a kid and adults like to fight!
Earlier this year, we had our younger son's birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese. The place was crawling with kids on a Saturday afternoon. My kids often go there when school is out or for birthday parties. We've never had an altercation there or seen one. But apparently, some CECs are hotbeds of police activity, as this Wall Street Journal story showed.
Police officers in some communities say that they get more calls at Chuck E.'s place than they do at other restaurants and bars. One fight at a Michigan Chuck E.'s involved 85 people. "There's a biker bar down the street, and we rarely get calls there," Town of Brookfield (Ill.) Police Capt. Timothy Imler told the Journal.
The place brings out what security experts call the "mama-bear instinct," causing parents to step in when they feel their child is being threatened. The big news is now some CECs are no longer serving alcohol and hiring security guards to keep the peace. One Milwaukee restaurant has even instituted a dress code prohibiting what they call "gang-like" attire.
All of this at a place where a kid can be a kid. And sometimes grown-ups can act like them, too.
