Danica "Winnie" McKellar all grown up
So you're saying, of course Danica McKellar is grown up. She's 35 now and expecting her first child. She was just a kid when she starred on The Wonder Years. So why should we care about what she does?
Well, a few years ago, McKellar wrote a book called Math Doesn't Suck: How to Survive Middle School Without Losing Your Mind or Breaking a Nail. The book was directed at middle school girls who didn't like or get math. In 2007, she spoke with a teen writer for the Times and talked about how she felt it was really important for girls and women to understand math. McKellar graduated summa cum laude from UCLA, majoring in mathematics. Cool!
Back then, here's what McKellar had to say to girls:"If there's a guy you have to play dumb for, he must
not have very much to offer if he's going to be that intimidated by a girl with a brain."
That leads us to why McKellar is on our minds today. She just posed for Maxim, the men's mag with lots of photos of scantily clad women. McKellar is shown unbuttoning her school-girl uniform to reveal a red bra and panties in one of her poses. There are others. Oh, and she has a new book coming out in August, Hot X: Algebra Exposed.
So let me get this straight: it's not okay to play dumb to get a guy. But it is okay to show a lot of skin in the hopes of selling some books. I don't think that's a lesson we want girls to learn.

She has two sons and with 10 years of parenting under her belt, she's starting to feel a little less out of her league. She comes from a large family and loves to debate, so brace yourself when the hot topics come up.

Freelance writer Courtney Cairns Pastor wasn’t so sure about having kids and how she would balance child-rearing with her journalism career. It turned out that her journalism training went to good use. As the mom to a funny, active toddler, she learned to handle him like she did her sources. Never ask yes or no questions (the answer will always be no), get him to be specific (are you crying because you’re wet or your tooth hurts?) and be prepared for anything because no two days are the same. When she’s not playing trucks, Courtney crams for her book club, trains for races and occasionally bursts into showtunes. E-mail her at
