Deal or No Deal?
In addition to the typical road games we usually play on long car trips -- "Punch Bug" and "The Alphabet Game” are current favorites -- I’m playing a new one with my wallet. It’s called, “Deal or No Deal When
Traveling with 4 Kids Cross Country.” Please pull up a chair and ante up if you would like in on this fun game (and Howie Mandel is nowhere to be found).
Deal: Mount Vernon in Washington D.C. -- This is George Washington’s estate and it’s the D.C. attraction you never make it to because it is
about 20 miles southeast of the Lincoln Memorial and every other famous
monument. But you should take your kids there if you find yourself with
an opportunity. An excellent excursion with lots to see and do, and
fascinating history. (He had 8 pairs of dentures, and none of them were
made from wood.)
No Deal: Colonial Williamsburg ® -- Yep, it’s trademarked. Know
why? So they can rip you off exclusively. This is a weird place, folks.
There are a few original dwellings that hold a lot of interesting
history, but most of the buildings are recreated. Oh yeah, and to walk
these streets are free, but if you want any of the colonial nut jobs
dressed in period costumes to speak to you about them, that’ll be $37
for each adult over 12, $19 for kids. Otherwise, you can check out the
gift shops which curiously have no admission. I did notice that those
prices are aggressively modern…
Deal: Street souvenirs -- Although, they are of questionable origin in New York
No Deal: Times Square M&M’s -- They are about 50 cents a bag in billions of retail outlets around the world, but at the M&M Mega Store in Times Square they’ll run you about 35 bucks a bag. Cute dispensers in the shape of the Statue of Liberty will put you back another C-note or so. They’ll melt in your mouth and not in your hand because your jaw
drops so far down at the cash register.
Deal: Gas -- $3.89 a gallon.
No Deal: Gas -- $3.89 a gallon.
Which ultimately leads to another frequent game of this road trip: “Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire?”
