Whoa, Momma!

Economy takes a turn -- for the worse!

In case you haven't heard, Progress Energy is boosting rates for customers by as much as 31 percent in January. THIRTY-ONE PERCENT!

That's right, just as all your holiday bills come due, your power bill is going to go up as well. It's enough to make you say "Bah, humbug" as we sweat out the rest of August. Mom_checks

In the final months of 2008, we Mommas are going to try to save some money. To help you, we have come up with a few quickie money-saving tips. Maybe it will be enough to pay that electricity bill when it comes due. But these can work, even if you aren't facing a double-digit increase for electricity.

* Drive the speed limit or slightly less to save gas. Yes, it probably will mean some dirty looks and horns being blown at you, but it will save a few bucks in the long run. The little bit of good news out of Gustav is that it doesn't appear that oil refineries or rigs were disabled so gas prices may continue going down.

Budget, budget, budget. Make sure you buy only the necessities and try to stave off the extras. Could you make a sandwich instead of buying lunch if you work outside the home? Can you do without that cute skirt this month?

* If you can, sock away $10 (or $5) every week. And don't touch it, no matter what. At the end of the year, take it to the bank or credit union so that it can gain interest and then, start over again. You'll be surprised at how that can add up.

* Unplug "vampires." These are cable boxes, televisions, phone chargers, iPod charging stations. All of them draw power even when they are not charging a device, and even when they are in sleep mode. Look here for other ways to lower your electricity costs.

* Use reusable containers to pack your kids' lunch instead of buying those plastic baggies. The bags cost a lot and the plastic wastes our oil resources.

There are probably others that you know from years of budgeting for your families. So please share with your Momma friends.
