Free bike fitness trainer every Saturday

Bettyboop Get out your bikes for this. We had  a comment on last week's list of free and cheap things to do with your kids that I think deserves a post of its own. I know of this bike riding group because I see them pedaling around downtown every weekend. But I had no idea it was such a well-thought-out plan for getting people into bicycling. It's like getting a free bike fitness trainer and coach, and kids are welcome.

Kimberly writes:

Every weekend, there's a free bicycle ride on Saturday morning that starts near downtown St. Petersburg. I'm the "sweep" for the Gib's Ride Group. That's like being a host. I ride at the back of the group and make make sure new people fit in.

Also, the sweep makes sure you don't get left bicycling alone if you haven't yet built up the endurance or speed to do the whole route or keep up with the group. Put in 30 minutes two or three times a week and keep coming out. In two or three weeks, you'll be able to do the whole ride. We can teach you pedaling techniques to make it happen, too.

It's really inexpensive to bicycle with us. What you need:

  • Water bottle
  • Bicycle helmet
  • Whatever bicycle you have
  • Spare inner tube for your bicycle so we can assist you faster if you get a flat tire

Minors of all ages are appreciated and can participate via riding on a bicycle or being pulled in a trailer. Minors must bring written permission signed by their parents or legal guardians and an adult to supervise them.

Experienced parents and grandparents can assist you in educating your child about how to do on-road bicycling.

We've been distributing educational fliers to motorists since March 2001. A lot of motorists have started bicycling since then, too. So we have a lot of educated motorists with experience bicycling. So, they do a good job of respecting bicyclist's needs and laws.

After the ride, join us at a downtown restaurant for more chatting and a late breakfast. Or pack a picnic lunch to enjoy the downtown parks with your family and friends.

The bicycle ride:
Meet at North Shore Pool, 9th Avenue NE & North Shore Drive NE in St. Petersburg.
Ask for the Gib's Ride Group.
We take off sharp at 8:30 AM.
Ride ends about 10:00 AM.
I know several ways to shorten the route if you can't do the whole 1 1/2 hours yet.
Breakfast at downtown restaurant immediately after the ride.

Thanks for the heads up, Kimberly! For those interested, keep in mind that lots of bicycling groups meet up at North Shore Pool on Saturday's so you may have to keep asking where the Gib's Ride Group is until you find them.
