Whoa, Momma!

Get a notebook for yourself, too

Notebook One of the best tips I got from my 2006 interview with Mom Central founder Stacy DeBroff was to start off the school year with a binder of my own in the house for all the school papers, fliers, Web site passwords and carpool information in one neat notebook. DeBroff, who has written several books on navigating school and extracurricular activities, creates a notebook for each child at the start of the school year to put papers that may be needed later.

Cursive I realized the wisdom of this when my first grader asked me how to write the cursive letter Q. Geez oh pete, I hadn't written a cursive Q in 20 years. I had to Google it. If I had only been able to find the cursive writing sheet the teacher gave us the first week, it would have been a lot easier.

I now use a lime green binder with dividers for subjects that have pockets so I can easily jam in a handout or newsletter. It has the school phone directory, the Web site and passwords for the academic sites the teacher uses, the suggested reading lists, carpool numbers and most important -- never to be misplaced again -- the handwriting guide.
