Girl Scouts: Our peanut butter cookies are safe!
It seems that this peanut butter product recall has everyone on edge. Even the Girl Scouts felt the need to reassure everyone that the peanut butter cookies that they are selling right now are safe. Scout officials posted a news release on their Web site saying that neither of the license bakers affiliated with Girl Scout cookies use peanut butter supplied by the Peanut Corporation of America Georgia plant that has been linked to a salmonella outbreak. The outbreak has been linked to more than 470 illnesses and six deaths. Dozens of products have been removed from store shelves because of their link to the PCA plant.
Now, the list of recalled products continues to grow. And while all the products that have been removed thus far have been for human consumption, Grreat Choice Dog Biscuit products sold by PetSmart have now been added to the list because they contain peanut paste made by PCA.
I've gotten a couple of calls and emails today from folks who think they may have gotten sick from some of the tainted products. If you do, the toll-free number for the Food and Drug Administration's Consumer Complaint Coordinator in Florida is 1-866-337-6272. Now, if you are still looking a little sideways at that jar of peanut butter or the peanut butter crackers in your pantry, fear not. Food and Travel Editor Janet Keeler, who also writes the blog Stir Crazy, has these alternatives for snacks for your kids. Here's what she has to say:
"Don't freak out because junior can't have his peanut butter crackers at snack time. There are some alternatives that will take the edge off the hunger pangs:
1. Celery with cream cheese and raisins or with whipped cream cheese flavored with herbs or fruit.
2. String cheese.
3. Cheese and crackers or premade cheese sandwich crackers.
4. Yogurt with fruit dippers.
5. Pretzel sticks wrapped with ham.
6. Granola bars
7. Fig Newtons
8. Popcorn or popcorn cakes (or rice cakes)
9. Crackers and almond butter
10. Trail mix
11. Ranch dressing with baby carrots
12. Apples, bananas, oranges, grapes
13. Dried fruits and nuts
