Gov't pamphlet encourages Brit teens to masturbate

14

July

A pamphlet from Britain's National Health Service says kids have a "right" to have an enjoyable sex life and is encouraging kids to masturbate instead of engaging in sex with a partner.

Because the UK has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in Western Europe, officials there are trying to find a way to stem the tide. The leaflet carries the slogan, "An orgasm a day keeps the doctor away."

It also says: "Health promotion experts advocate five portions of fruit and veg a day and 30 minutes' physical activity three times a week. What about sex or masturbation twice a week?" (Sounds like the good meal Meg Ryan ordered in When Harry Met Sally.)

As you might expect, parents, teachers and family groups have not reacted favorably. They say this just might make kids want to engage in the mystery dance even more. After all, they are teenagers.

"Urging them to enjoy their own bodies is a bit like encouraging cows to eat grass or birds to fly," noted one British newspaper columnist, who then -- with tongue planted firmly in cheek -- added, "It is not enough to promote sexual exercise but the weekly amount should be estimated. Are we on the brink of a new government initiative? Will a masturbation tsar be appointed to oversee nationwide orgasm league tables?"
