Great park is getting a makeover

playground.jpgOne of our favorite parks, Largo's Central Park, is getting a makeover.

As our colleague Dominick Tao reports, the playground at Largo’s popular gathering spot, with its lush shade and nifty playground, is being demolished March 5 to make way for new equipment like rock walls and sand boxes that double as paleontology digs.

The current playground, which was voted best playground in Tampa Bay by Nickelodeon Parents Connect Web magazine in 2008 and 2009, is nearing its 16th birthday, and some parts have been boarded up because they broke and replacement parts are no longer produced. The cost of the new playground — about $650,000, including new artificial turf — seemed to be a justified expenditure for most city commissioners.

“There hasn’t been a time I’ve been to this playground, whatever time, even at night, where it hasn’t been packed. I think in these economic times, it gives a place for the family to take their children that’s inexpensive,” said Vice Mayor Robert Murray.

The new structure will be finished on April 9 during a “community build,” where members of the community are expected to install bolt-on pieces such as slides and swings to save on installation costs.
