This year Halloween falls on a Sunday and some cities in Utah and the Bible Belt of the South have already officially declared that trick or treating will take place on Saturday night, Oct. 30, not on the Sunday when the youngers, it is assumed, will be observing the Sabbath.

This brings up questions of church and state, but it can pose a problem for devout families (or could it be a boon to kids who go out begging for candy on both nights?) For Mormons it has been an especially public debate in Utah. It's candy vs. church in a state where the majority of the population are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Keeping the Christian Sabbath is a major tenet of the LDS faith, and many observant Mormons try to avoid going to the store, let alone walking their kids door-to-door looking for Whoppers.

It won't fall on a Sunday again until 2021, so chances some of the kids themselves will have to make that call as parents by then.
