Whoa, Momma!

Sharon Kennedy Wynne, Tracey Henry and Suzannah DiMarzio

Has news of mom killing her kids upset yours?

A mom shoots her two teens dead. They were "mouthy," she tells police. The shooting of 16-year-old Calyx and 13-year-old Powers Beau Schenecker has stunned Tampa Bay and is sparking conversations among some families.

Is your family talking about the Schenecker teens?

Parents, what questions are your children asking? What answers are you giving them? The Times would like to hear from you. Call Marlene Sokol at 813-226-3356 or 813-624-2739 or email her at

At our house, the newspaper landed with a thump and a blaring headline "Mom Admits Killing Kids." I turned the paper over on the counter thinking my kids didn't need to see such disturbing news on a nice Saturday morning. I figured it would be big news around town, though, and we'd have to talk about it later, but I put it off for the moment.

When I got back from my morning run, my older son said, "Dad showed us this news story," he said lifting the newspaper like it was putrid. Oh boy. "And?" My son smiled and said, "He said the kids were mouthing off. We better watch it." Ah, good, no psychological damage, humor with the sadness. But is that how most people are handling it?
