Helping children with mental health problems

In a new book, We’ve Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication, Judith Warner tells the Mom_sadkid story of how she discovered the pressing—and very real—mental health issues that many children struggle with.
In the process, she met parents who had started out just like her: skeptical that medication was what Johnny needed to get up off the couch. Those parents learned the hard way that even preschoolers can have very real mental health issues, ones that can be helped by a good mental health provider or judicious use of medication.

We think this is an important and under-reported issue, and we’d like to talk with parents whose youngsters have struggled with childhood depression for a possible story in the St. Petersburg Times. Please send an email to slmarshall.sptimes@gmail.com if you’d be willing to talk about your experiences, and help others understand what it’s really like to make these tough decisions.
