Hip kids find Snuggies cool, really

Snuggie Who knew that Snuggies were cool? At least they are among hip teens and tweens. My family has a Christmas gift exchange, the kind where you can steal somebody else's gift. It's always fun to throw a turkey into the mix so I picked up a Snuggie.

My husband was mad at me, saying it was mean to put in something dumb like that, you should always bring a nice gift for the exchange. But when my middle schooler saw it, he was mad at me, too. But not because he thought it was dorky -- he didn't want me giving it away. He wanted it!

One of his friends, who is one of the more fashionable girls in school, had it at the top of her Christmas list. And some teens in our neighborhood, disappointed they didn't get one for Christmas, were scouring the post-holiday sales only to find the shelves empty.

What am I missing? I asked my son, what's the deal? It's a blanket. "With sleeves!" he added, like I was as dumb as a bag of hammers.

Psychology Today even looked at the genius behind the marketing of this backless wizard robe revealing how helpless the persuadable are. It may be ridiculous, but when did that ever stop the American consumer?

Maybe that's why the event planners at last week's Cirque du Surreal in Clearwater wanted partygoers to wear their Snuggies. Talk about a surreal scene. There have been Snuggie pub crawls, Wear Your Snuggie to Work days and the cast of the Today Show draped in linty fabric.

So there you go. Looking for a gift idea for a kid's birthday party? Check the "As Seen on TV" aisle at Walgreens. They have them in kid's sizes now, dog Snuggies, designer Snuggies that even come in camouflage print for tough boys who want a blanket -- with sleeves!

As the fashionably dressed Yoda would say, the height of fashion, the Snuggie is.
