The horror -- horoscopes for your baby
I have a lot of respect for Babycenter.com, but this seems a bit over the top: Now parents and parents-to-be can log in to check their baby's horoscopes. They can see what their baby's personalties could be like based on their astrological signs and what they need to do be effective parents based on their own signs.
In the interest of fun and to debunk pseudoscience, I logged in my sign, Cancer and my son's sign, also Cancer.
"Your Cancer daughter or son is most comfortable at home, surrounded by family and pets, as well as familiar sights, sounds and smells. If your family’s lifestyle is more adventurous, your Cancer child will need something to serve as an anchor: a favorite soft blanket, maybe, or a treasured stuffed animal," the profile said.
It went onto advise that Cancer children are comforted by traditions and rituals so family means and bath/bedtime routines are very important.
Duh -- isn't that true for most babies and toddlers? Sounds a lot like the advice in my book "What to Expect: The Toddler Years."
For me, it said my biggest pitfall would be smothering my child. Well, that may be true, but I doubt it has anything to do with my June 24 birthday. My son is an only child and because of my advanced age, he will likely stay that way, so that's most likely the real reason for any possible tendency to overprotect.
While the horoscopes might be fun to try, I wouldn't let it replace the pediatrician or pyschologist or even good ol' parental instinct.
