It's school search time, Pinellas parents
With the state budget sucking the air out of school districts across the state, Pinellas County parents have been put through the ringer. The school choice system is out. Neighborhood schools are in. That means if you don't get into a fundamental or magnet school, you have one neighborhood school at your disposal. Got one nearby but out of your zone? Tough noogies.
Fortunately, those that did the hard work of shopping for the right school didn't see their choice totally go up in smoke. You can still stay at your "grandfathered" long-distance school as long as you drive the kids yourself.
So now is the time to start working on next year. Check out the great smorgasbord of information our education reporters have put together on finding the right school for your children. If you hope to get in a magnet or fundamental program, the deadline is Feb. 16. The School Board plans to approve the elementary school zone map on Feb. 10, so for neighborhood schools you have a little more time. Either way, now is the time to sit up and pay attention.
