Kick the kids off the couch and head to Fit Kids Playground on Saturday

With all the chatter about how adults aren't doing anything to stay healthy or how kids are not as active as  Mom_kidsexercise they should be, a Saturday event might be just the thing you need to jump start your kids. And in turn, it may help you too.

Susan Thurston, a Times staff writer who frequently writes about parenting issues and posts here on the Whoa, Momma! blog, spoke with the moms behind Fit Kids Playground, a one-day program to get kids up and active while also promoting healthy eating habits.

"We didn't want it just to be another vendor fair,'' Marisa Langford, who along with Candice Bernstein created the event, told Thurston. "It's more than that. It's interactive. All of the activities revolve around health and fitness and target kids.''

Langford is mom to two children ages 4 and 3 and has another on the way. The co-creator of the playground, Candice Bernstein, has a 5-year-old son. These Mommas want to share information on keeping your kids healthy and fit, especially in the summer when healthy eating can fly out the window because of schedule changes.

There will be fun activities such as jumping rope, toddler yoga classes and dancing. Publix Greenwise Market is sponsoring Nutrition Alley where samples of healthy foods will be available and other vendors will be on hand to promote their various classes and programs.

While there are other programs throughout the summer to keep your kids in shape, it's worth planning early to go to this one, especially for your youngest kids. It's from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Old Hyde Park Village in Tampa. And the best part about it -- it's free.
