groceries.jpgA group of kindergarteners from Sarasota’s Primrose School at Lakewood Ranch have been saving their money all year and today will make a field trip to Publix to buy food for the Community Coaliton on Homelessnes and local families in need this Thanksgiving.

More good news from do-gooders: Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey collected close to 5,000 pounds of food yesterday in less than two hours as part of their annual food drive for Metropolitan Ministries at the St. Petersburg Times Forum, where donors exchanged canned goods for circus tickets.

A little child will lead them, no? If you'd like to follow their example, check out the following places to make donations. This can be a wonderful family or neighborhood project.

Here's some places to share your heart:

For Thanksgiving and Christmas there's also this:

  • The Suncoast Haven of Rest Rescue Mission, 5625 Park Blvd., invites every person living in Pinellas County or thereabouts who would like to eat a free Thanksgiving meal, or who would like to volunteer to help serve the meal to join together at 1 p.m. Thursday and/or Friday for a delicious meal with all the trimmings. Volunteers should arrive at noon, eaters are 1 p.m. For more information call (727)545-8282.
  • Enjoy a free, hot, home cooked traditional Thanksgiving meal anytime between noon and 4 p.m. Thursday at Pilgrim Church in the fellowship hall, 6315 Central Ave. No RSVP required and there are no eligibility requirements. Due to overwhelming generosity, additional volunteers are not needed at this location. For more information call (727)347-1226.
  • The Clearwater Police Department is seeking donations for two holiday fundraisers to benefit disadvantaged youth. Money and gifts for children are being sought for the Holiday Cheer project. Call police Sgt. Wilton Lee at (727) 562-4310. A toy collection box will be in the lobby at police headquarters at 645 Pierce St. The deadline for donations is Dec. 15.
