Make your own family board game

monopoly.jpgI was flipping through the book My Great Idea by the editors of Family Fun magazine -- a compilation of great ideas from parents around the country for solving problems or creating family traditions. With extended family likely to be gathering this month and next, I liked the idea submitted by 13-year-old Bailey Bell of Leavenworth, Kansas, who created a board game of her grandfather's life.

She used a piece of cardboard covered in cloth (or you could recycle an old game board or get one cheap at a yard sale). Squares on the board contained instructions related to his favorite activities and the whole thing was packed in a decorative pizza box, along with dice and playing pieces.

You could make your own family Monopoly set, with tales and inside jokes about the family. "Uncle Charley got lost again, go back 5 spaces to get him," or "Grandma knitted you one of her gorgeous quilts, sell it on eBay and collect $200"  You get the picture. Creating the game could fill the down time when kids are out of school and playing the game could fill the family time with lots of laughter.
