Maybe those video games CAN teach your kids something

Like millions of other folks this weekend, my family and I have been watching parts of the Olympic Winter Games taking place in Vancouver. We've seen some ski jumping, moguls skiing and speed skating. On Sunday night, I learned something

We settled in to watch the pairs figure skating, and one by one the couples began going through their routines. Mom_mariosonic "Oh, that's a camel spin," said my 7-year-old, sound like an old pro. "Did you see that sit spin?" chimed in the 11-year-old.

I looked at my husband, and he looked at me. We were both bewildered. I finally asked them how they knew all of the terms for the various moves. Simple, they said.

"Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games," they explained. In case you don't know, it's a video game that came out last year. It simulates all their favorite Nintendo and Sega characters participating in the cold sports.

So maybe some video games are educational. But I think this is also a good argument for keeping them away from Grand Theft Auto.
