'Medium Mom' mixes motherly duties, talking to folks in the afterlife
I walk around ladders, not under them. I refuse to open an umbrella indoors. And when I wanted to remove a wall of mirrors from my house, I called in a handyman. No seven years of bad luck for me.
So when I saw the "Medium Mom'' was coming to St. Pete Beach, I thought I'd inquire. Maureen Hancock claims to have supernatural powers that allow her to hear voices from dead people. The mother of two young boys travels the country hosting shows called "Postcards from Heaven'' to give audience members messages from beyond. She comes to the Don CeSar Beach Resort and Spa on June 13.
Of course, being superstitious and talking to the dead are quite different things. But chances are if you believe in superstitions, you believe in the possibility of psychic powers. Who really knows anyway?
I grew in a household that didn't like to tempt fate. My mother used to shoo spiders out of the house, rather than kill them, because she thought it would bring good luck. My aunt, a native of Puerto Rico, played Ouija religiously.
I never disputed these pecularities, just like I don't discredit Medium Mom's claim. Maybe her alleged powers are mere coincidences and wishful thinking on the recipient's behalf. But maybe they're not.
