Momma's free and cheap family events

It's going to be a chilly weekend but that doesn't mean you can't have some fun. Check out these free and cheap events. And help keep your New Year's resolution to lose weight with a freebie from Baskin-Robbins.

Finally a gym membership pays off. Today (that's Thursday) is Baskin-Robbins Mom_bright_2 BRight Choices Day, which means the ice cream makers are pushing their new line of lighter products by offering customers who show proof of gym membership a free 2.5 ounce scoop of any of the BRight Choices flavors today. Check here for Tampa Bay area locations.

Borders book stores throughout the Tampa Bay area will be having a free special inauguration celebration for kids in the stores Saturday starting at 2 p.m. Bring the whole family for art activities, games, a scavenger hunt, and an official oath ceremony to hail to the chief. Go here for store locations.

Mom_sarah What does it say about you if you love herding dogs or tiny toy poodles? A lot, actually. Meet author Sarah Wilson (shown here with her My Smart Puppy partner Brian Kilcommons) for a free behavior demonstration and signing of her book Dogology on Friday at the SPCA Tampa Bay facility at 9099 130th Ave. N in Largo. Wilson, a trainer and expert on the complex bond between dogs and their owners, uses quizzes, psychological insights and humor to analyze why dog owners gravitate toward certain breeds and explain what owners’ choices reveal about character and emotional makeup. The free event is from 6 to 9 p.m., but you need to reserve your spot by calling (727) 586-3591 or online.

Meet the celebrated pop artist Peter Max when he arrives for a two-day Mom_liberty appearance to accompany his show now on display at the Arts Center, 719 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg. The official artist of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his iconic brand of bright swirls and psychedelic flourishes have decorated many a dorm room. You can meet him at a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday or from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Arts Center. Some of his art will be on sale to benefit arts educational programs.

On Sunday, hear the great sounds at the 24th annual National MLK Drum Major for Justice Battle of the Bands & Drum Line Extravaganza at 6:15 p.m. at Tropicana Field, One Tropicana Drive, St. Petersburg. Performers include college and high school marching bands from five states; and Historically Black Colleges & Universities All-Star band members. Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance; $15 VIP seating. Purchase advance tickets at Enoch Davis Center, 1111 18th Ave. S., or Looking Good Men’s Fashions in St. Petersburg, Tampa and Bradenton.

Even though they aren't having the best season, you can probably still find some great bargains and memorabilia at the Tampa Bay Lightning Garage Sale, from 2-7:30 p.m. Saturday at the St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. The team will be selling game-worn jerseys, sticks, helmets, gloves and more. If you buy a whole uniform, maybe you could suit up and show them how to win a few games. Call (813) 301-2500 for more information. It's free to get in.

Finally, the grand opening of the Tampa Bay History Center is at 11 a.m. Saturday in Tampa. The gorgeous 60,000 square foot museum sits on the water and includes artifacts detailing Tampa BMom_tbhmuseum_4ay's rich history, from Seminole Indians and cigar factories to sports attractions and life on the bay. There will be demonstrations of cigar rolling and sponge cutting, Flameco Dancers, Elvis and Ray Charles impersonators and lots more. The outdoor entertainment is free but tickets to get into the museum are $12 for adults; $10 for folks 65 and older, youths 13-17 and students with an ID; $7 for children 4-12; free for children 3 and younger. Groups of 10 or more at $6 each and school groups of 10 or more are $5 each. For more information call (813)228-0097 or email
