Mommas should care about themselves as much as their kids

mom_overweightwoman.jpgWould it help to confess that months ago, I moved into the fat side of my closet?

Or would it still be ugly to quote from this email from a parents' group at my kids' school?

"I will be ordering the navy blue (club name) polo shirts this year. These shirts will be embroidered on the front and the (club name) theme will be on the back of the shirts. The shirts are a wonderful way to show support for your talented (club name) son or daughter...

"The shirts come in Men's and Women's sizes: XS, Small, Med., Large & XLarge. These shirts are $17. The larger sizes: XXL are $19 and each additional X will be an additional dollar. For example: XXXL = $20; XXXXL = $21 - these sizes go up to 10XL for men and 6XL for women."

Yowza.

Again: Fat side of closet. Huffing and puffing on the tennis court. Walking more than running on the track. Closing my eyes on the doctor's scale. You get it.

Still, I've got to wonder about that hypothetical 6XL. Has that woman not had a wake-up call, or a come-to-Jesus from her doctor? Has she not considered the kind of role model she is for those children she clearly dotes on so completely?

I've spent a lot of time in PTA and worked shoulder-to-shoulder with a good number of XL and XXL women. They are selfless and nurturing and detail-oriented when it comes to their children. But I've often wondered: Don't they want to be around to know their grandchildren? And isn't that what their kids want too? How many of us have sacrificed our health on the altar of hands-on parenting, all the while sublimating our stress in the fast-food lane?

But that's just a wild assumption, based on a random email. I'm just as likely, when I meet these parents, to think I'm on the set of Desperate Housewives.
