Mommas to stage "nurse in" at park

mom_breastfeeding.jpgIn this day and age, you would think this kind of problem would not pop up. And yet, here we go again.

Some moms were breastfeeding their children at an Apopka park, sitting in a circle so no one could see anything, when a pool lifeguard told them to stop because he thought they were exposing themselves.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that the women told the lifeguard that what they were doing was legal. He passed the buck and told them to take it up with a manager.

It wasn't until after the women vowed to have a "nurse-in" at the park that officials began to respond.

"It's an unfortunate situation," said Matt Suedmeyer,  division manager for Orange County Parks and Recreation. "I apologize to the mothers. It was an unintentional mistake by our staff, and we've all learned from this mistake."

The problem is that no one in charge seemed to know what the law says (here it is). Maybe everyone around the state needs to be reminded of it, even some folks here in the bay area.

County officials say they have now given the lifeguards a refresher course in what's legal and what's not. Still, the moms intend to make sure everyone gets the point Saturday by having their "nurse-in" from 9 a.m. to noon at the park.

Let's all hope the lifeguards will leave them alone to conduct this most non-violent of protests, while the babies get the nourishment they're supposed to get anytime -- and anywhere -- they get hungry.
