meangirl.jpgThe school year is rapidly approaching and we’ve got some back-to-school events this week to get you as sharp as a No. 2 pencil.

Mean Girls: What better way to wind down from summer and prepare for a new school year than seeing this teen comedy penned by Tina Fey? Even better, they are showing it for free on Clearwater Beach on Saturday night, so you can sink your toes into the sand and laugh as Lindsay Lohan and crew undermine The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new high school. That’s so fetch. The movie starts at dusk at Pier 60, 10 Pier 60 Drive, Clearwater Beach.

Back to School Fair Prepare for the upcoming school year with fun and games and giveaways from 9 a.m. top 4 p.m. Saturday. They will also sneak in some tips on health, wellness and safety along with the live entertainment, games, arts and crafts, face painting, balloon artists, informative speakers, karaoke and workshops. The first 150 kids get a free back to school goodie bag filled with school supplies. Also, 11-year-old author Connor Wilson will read from and sign copies of his new book A Giant Pencil. Back to School Bash The Florida State Fairgrounds’ Expo Hall will have 88,000 square feet of family fun with kid-specific exhibits, a petting zoo, face painting, live family entertainment and lots of samples of treats for the school lunch box at the Signature Sampling Zone. With loads of free give-aways and many children’s activities to keep little hands busy all day long. It runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Fairgrounds, 4802 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. Admission is $9 for adults, kids 12 and under are free.

Members Night at the Aquarium The Florida Aquarium’s back-to-school bash on Monday is for members only, and it includes a DJ dancing, crafts, a bake sale, mermaid shows (6:30 and 7:30 p.m.) and games for the kids. Members Night also includes a Swim with the Fishes for the discounted rate of $50 per person. Or, set sail on one of two “School is in Session” harbor cruises (6:15 and 8 p.m.) aboard the Bay Spirit II; $15 adults, $10 child. Price: Members free, $5 additional guests (reservations required). Free Back-To-School Immunizations Several locations in Hillsborough County are offering free back-to-school physicals and immunizations starting Saturday through Aug. 18 for any school-aged child entering Florida schools for the first time. The clinics will be held at a variety of locations around the county, including three Hillsborough County Community Service Centers, Tampa General Hospital at Healthpark, Blake High School and more. Back-to-School Saturday Teen Vogue and the Shops at Wiregrass join up for an official day of back-to-school shopping with discounts in select stores and “Bieber Fever” games at The Shops at Wiregrass, 28211 Paseo Drive, Wesley Chapel on Saturday startin at 10 a.m.

Teacher Appreciation Day The Henry B. Plant Museum invites all teachers to explore the museum on Saturday and experience the self-guided audio tour. It’s free for teachers and their families at the Henry B. Plant Museum, 401 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa
Teen Clothing Swap Teens ages 13 to 18 can bring their clean, gently used clothes and swap for “new-to-you” fashions for the upcoming school year. The swap starts at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Safety Harbor Public Library, 101 Second St. N, Safety Harbor.

Appy Hour The Largo Library offers a session Tuesday at 3 p.m. to learn about apps that are age appropriate for children and could make the back-to-school process easier. It’s free at the Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive, Largo.
