"Muppets Take Manhattan" in the top 50 kid movies in the last 25 years? Seriously?
I love when some group or panel comes out with a list of the top 100 this or the best 50 of that. It gets everyone riled up because there is no way they can know better than us what we really like best. So it's no wonder that the experts at TimetoPlayMag.com have come out with a list of the New Classics, the top 50 kid movies over the last 25 years.
Now, the Time to Play editorial board selected the movies for kids who were born after 1980, who were "the first group of youngsters to enjoy watching their favorite films over and over with the introduction of home video ...," said a media release.
The folks in charge of Time to Play are toy industry veterans. Jim Silver was for years the editor in chief at Toy Wishes magazine and now has the same role at TTPM. His partner in the venture is Chris Byrne, also known as the Toy Guy. But you may be asking, what makes them think they know movies. And how in the world does The Muppets Take Manhattan (#20) beat out Ratatouille (#37) or Home Alone (#5) best Beauty and the Beast (#9)?
A team of 12 Time to Play movie buffs spanning four generations reviewed hundreds of movies that have debuted since 1983; criteria included a theatrical release, story, quality of the film, entertainment value, whether they stand up to repeated viewing over time and if kids still love them today.
Granted, there are six Disney/Pixar movies in the top 10 but those that are there feel like a good fit -- even if they don't always feel like they are in the right order. And I like the number one choice. What follows is the list of the top 10 from the Web site, which offers parents and gift givers -- read grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends --inforamtion, entertainment and services on what's fun for children and families. You can find all 50 movies here.
