Whoa, Momma!

My kid's first rock concert

Greenday Ah, Green Day, I love ya. Even though our pop music critic had some quibbles with the gimmicky overuse of pyrotechnics, fans on stage singing along, T-shirt guns and a blizzard of confetti, I want to thank you boys for showing my son the joy of a well-done rock show.

I've been dreading being dragged to some teenie bop monstrosity like Hannah Montana or the Jonas Brothers, or worse, the American Idol tour. But no, my boy has generally shunned the popsters and posers, thank the gods of rock.

The problem is that as middle school approaches, he's becoming a bigger fan of rappers like Kanye West and Flo Rida, who are not known for putting on family friendly shows. While some might raise eyebrows at my idea of Green Day as family fare, it depends on the family. An older kid who understands sarcasm and context can laugh when lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong fires up the crowd by screaming, "This is not a computer screen! Get your [bleepin'] [bleeps] outta those [bleepin'] seats!"  It was with a wink and was hilarious.

I just wonder if the kid knows how lucky he is to see a great band at the top of their game for his first outing. It's all down hill from here, kid.
