New Disney XD show 'Kick Buttowski' is annoying for Mommas, funny for boys
When I first began seeing commercials on Disney XD for the new show, Kick Buttowski -- Suburban Daredevil, I thought, "Aw, come on Disney, you can do better than that."Just the name of the main character -- Kick Buttowski -- made me cringe.
Of course, the bad pun in the name made my boys shake with laughter. Clearly it's aimed at the 6-12 year-old male demographic.
The show is about a kid who is about the size of a stocky 5 year old but has a voice like he's smoked cigarettes for 60 years. Clarence "Kick" Buttowski likes to do daredevil stunts that -- surprise! -- frequently backfire. He's always dressed in what looks like a jumpsuit Evel Kneivel sent to the cleaners and it shrank.
In the first episode, Kick takes on the dangers of Dead Man's Drop, a high hill in his town, and then tries to sneak out of the house to see his idol at a monster truck rally. I saw only a couple of touches of cleverness -- listen to what Kick yells when he falls off Dead Man's Drop the first time -- but mostly it's just goofy slapstick. But the kids liked it enough to want to see it again.
The show premieres at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, between two episodes of the far superior Phineas and Ferb. In our house, a new Phineas and Ferb is appointment TV because it always offers a cascade of wild jokes that we can all enjoy. Something tells me that when Kick comes on, I'm going to be busy cleaning out the sink.
