The news I failed to explain
I'm in the car with my 8-year-old daughter over the weekend, listening to NPR. Gustav is the lead story. The news is enough to shock her, because despite looking at tracking maps and having both her parents reassure her, she still couldn't believe Florida was safe from the monster storm.
But then the newscast shifts to the dispute between Russia and Georgia. She hears it and says, "Russia and Georgia are fighting?!" I answer, yes, honey, they are. Of course, I totally fail to make the key point.
So she says, "OH MY GOSH, WE HAVE WAR RIGHT ON TOP OF US??!!" Uh, no, sweetie. The nation of Georgia and Russia are fighting. Clearly I'm not doing a good enough job of keeping her informed.
