Parents turn to 'True Blood' and TV shows for baby names

April

Sookie The psychic waitress from True Blood and the trenchcoat-wearing angel on Supernatural have inspired pregnant women to name their babies after them.

According to Namipedia, the baby name encyclopedia from The Baby Name Wizard, Sookie (shown at left and not to be confused with the Jersey Shore's big-haired Snooki) and Castiel are the two hottest growing baby names for 2010.

BuddyTV.com looked at the list, and cross referenced their TV Guide and came up with these results:

For girls, the five fastest-growing names are:

Sookie (Anna Paquin's character on True Blood)
Tenley
(the runner-up on the latest season of The Bachelor)
Eloise
(Daniel Faraday's mother on Lost)
Genevieve (Genevieve Cortese is an actress who recently married Supernatural's Jared Padalecki and is currently on ABC's FlashForward)
Piper
(one of the witches from Charmed

For boys, the list is:

Castiel (Misha Collins' angel from Supernatural)
Declan
(one of the guys from Kyle XY)
Atreyu
(one of the main characters in The Neverending Story)
Dashiell (perhaps a resurgence for author Dashiell Hammett's detective novels)
P
hineas (from the Disney cartoon Phineas and Ferb)

But these names are just the rising stars. According to the Social Security records, the  top 5 most popular names are more traditional:

Rank Male name Female name
1 Jacob Emma
2 Michael Isabella
3 Ethan Emily
4 Joshua Madison
5 Daniel Ava
6 Alexander Olivia
7 Anthony Sophia
8 William Abigail
9 Christopher Elizabeth
10 Matthew Chloe

Note: Rank 1 is the most popular, rank 2 is the next most popular, and so forth.
