Remember Highlights magazine? We all do!
So I'm sitting at the Suncoast Medical Clinic waiting on a friend and there it was. It had changed a little and had more color than the old two-toned cover with some cartoonish drawings on it that I remembered. But it was Highlights magazine! Oh boy, I thought, almost hearing the voice of Ralphie from A Christmas Story in my head. Is there anything better to pass the time than seeing how many differences there are in the two drawings? Or seeing how badly Goofus is acting compared to Gallant? It sure beats a month-old issue of People, that's for sure.
Maybe that's a story I'll tell the good folks at this new Web site: IWasAHighlightsKid.com. It's a place where adults like me can go to post stories about the beloved kids' 'zine that most of us saw in our pediatrician's office (well, back then we just called it the family doctor's office). Those are the two features I remember the most, but I also remember how easy and breezy the stories were to get through. I stubbornly clung to the familiar tome even as I got older and could have read the Reader's Digest if I'd wanted to. I'll bet some of you did too.
In addition to letting people post their memories, the site also has a quiz to see if you're more of a Goofus or a Gallant. All I can say is, my Momma must have raised me right.
