Remember the soldier mom who refused deployment?
A few months ago we posted what became a hot debate about the Army single mom who didn't show up to deploy because she didn't have anyone to care for her son. It was supposed to be her mom and then she backed out. Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, 21, says she was told by her superiors that if she couldn't find a relative or someone trustworthy to care for her 10 month old son, she'd have to put him in foster care while she served in Afghanistan
Now comes the news that she won't be facing jail time, but she'll be discharged and stripped of her veteran's benefits.
This story struck me as the ultimate working mother dilemma. And here I thought looking for day cares and nannies was hard! The military is far different, of course, but I can still feel for her as a fellow parent having one week to find a total stranger to watch her baby while she goes overseas. I know the military folks here will say tough noogies, but I feel for her. She was wrong to not have a better backup plan, but I'm glad she's not going to jail over this, so I think in the end it's fair.
