Whoa, Momma!

Say it loud -- infants like to yell!

Recently my 5-month old has discovered something new – his LUNGS! Mom_babyscream

In a matter of days, he went from being a bubbly infant who cooed and had the occasional laugh out loud moment, to a squalling, screaming, yelling little hell cat. The funny part is that everything can be just right – he’s fed, changed and comfy – and then out of nowhere he’s screaming. I described the sound as a mix of a cry, a lamb and a laugh. I’m not clear on whether I should quiet him down or encourage this noise.

According to, this is just the time when a toddler starts to understand where sounds come from. And mine has apparently realized his mouth is a great source of noise. The problem I have is knowing whether or not it’s okay to quiet him down. I don’t want to stifle my son’s sound-making development but I also don’t want him to get Baker Acted. What’s a new Momma to do?

It’s not likely that he understands my request for him to “settle down now” anyway. That hasn’t stopped me from giving him an evil eye every now and then when we’re in public and he starts yelling. I’m not sure he knows I mean business but it’s a good start.
