SpongeBob -- and the Nick Hotel -- want you!
We know the economy is in a really bad place. We know that layoffs, the Dow and foreclosures have us all biting our nails and staying awake at night. But the Nickelodeon Family Suites in Orlando and it's most famous resident -- SpongeBob Squarepants -- want to give us Floridians a break. It couldn't be because tourism numbers aren't as good as they used to be, could it? No, we will take them at their altruistic word.
With that in mind, the Nick Hotel is offering all Florida residents a discount on suites at the Orlando resort. Some rooms start as low as $99. And the resort fee -- an extra $25 -- is waived during your stay. That will show up if you book your room online but will be taken off when you check in. And because the hotel's pools have elaborate water slides, nets and dunking buckets, you won't have to venture out to a theme park.
When my family and I reviewed this hotel in 2005, rooms cost from $165 to more than $400 depending on the season and the suite size. Nick officials said that they thought that they had hit the price point just right. But they could not have envisioned this economy and what it would do to tourism and staycations for Floridians.
The deal is good through April 3 on rooms booked Sunday through Thursday. You pay an extra $30 premium for Friday and Saturday nights. And you receive a coupon book good for lots of savings including free beverages, two free Arcade cards loaded with 200 points each and 50 percent off a private sliming.
So, enjoy being a Floridian and have fun at the pool with your kids. All in all, it's a good deal.
