A summer slim-down for kids
While some might look at summertime as a great time to get your kids focused on slimming down, some nutritionists are sending up red flags that it can be a time for them to pack on the pounds as unscheduled kids spend far too much time online and in the snack drawer.
This article by correspondent Tom Valeo gives some good links to summer weight loss camps offered by USF and Wellspring, among others. And Lifestyle Family Fitness is offering free memberships for teens this summer.
And we here at Whoa, Momma! just got an e-mail from the super fun and affordable All Children's program Fit4AllKids, saying they are offering summer programs. Fit4Allkids is designed for families looking to make changes and get healthy, and it will be offering summer programs at several YMCA locations.
To participate, children need to be ages 8-12 years old (there's also a special class for teens) and have permission from their physician since this program is specifically designed for overweight children. The program fee is $75 per family for an eight-week program and a temporary membership to the YMCA. The program includes a nurse or dietitian, family coach and a fitness trainer.
The programs start at the various locations the week of June 15. For more information or questions, call All Children's Hospital at (727) 767-6923 or check out the program's Web site. Program Locations Include:
- YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg
- YMCA of the Sun Coast (Clearwater)
- James P. Gills YMCA Family Branch (New Port Richey)
- Hillsborough County Location (coming in fall 2009)
