Tax-free school shopping weekend is coming up

1

August

schoolboy500.jpgBack to school shoppers: Florida's tax free weekend is Aug 3-5. Here's a list of what's exempt. And here's some great tips from our colleague Susan Thurston on how to find the best deals on school supplies.

That list of what's exempt is important because not everything you might need is on the list. Many sporting goods, for example, are not exempt. Backpacks are exempt but briefcases are not. Write down everything you need to buy first. Then take that list and check the state's list of eligible items so you'll know what you can save 6-7 percent (depending on which county you are shopping in) by buying that weekend.

Stores usually offer sales just for the tax-free holiday, so check the newspaper's fliers and hunt for bargains before you shop.  Look for deep discounts on the more expensive items but don't forget about the little costs that can add up.
