Teens having sex despite making virginity pledges
Hundreds of thousands of youth across the country have participated in so-called virginity pledge programs -- including famous tween heartthrobs, the Jonas Brothers and American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, who defended the JoBros for the practice. The programs are designed to help stem the numbers of teens having sex by rooting their decision in faith. But the results of a new study are dispiriting. The study shows that youth who make virginity pledges are just as likely as those who don’t to engage in premarital sex. In other words, the data shows the programs don’t work.
But that hasn’t stopped youth pastors from promoting abstinence programs. Most think the study is flawed. Check out the discussion by the St. Petersburg Times and tampabay.com with youth pastors.
