Whoa, Momma!

Sharon Kennedy Wynne, Tracey Henry and Suzannah DiMarzio

Tell-tale sign of a sick child

Sickkid Watching a child struggle with fever, runny nose, vomiting and worse is a real tug on any parent's heart. My 8-year-old recently came down with the stomach flu and I've sprung into action like Superwoman on steroids. Anything she wants, she can have! Just so I can have my little girl's smile back.

But before the cape comes out, something hits me like a fresh ton of Momma's guilt: No wonder she behaved so awfully in the days before. No wonder she failed to listen, failed to help and failed to be nice to her sister. She was sick! And, of course, I lost my patience with her.

This bad behavior trend is not new in our house. It's like the aura before a migraine: a tell-tale sign that something awful is coming. As many times as my husband and I have seen it though, we always miss it. And so, guilt is a frequent overnight guest.
